LUSH bans the use of plastic water bottles

Cosmetics retailer LUSH bans the use of plastic water bottles

-      National campaign to reduce unnecessary plastic consumption  -

Each year 8 billion bottles and cans are thrown into landfill or littered in Australia.* This alarming statistic is one that high street retailer, LUSH Cosmetics hopes to challenge next week as it launches a national campaign encouraging Australians to recycle and refill their water bottles instead of purchasing more unnecessary plastic. From the 17th until the 23rd of February 2014 LUSH is partnering with environmental conservationist group, TAKE 3 to raise awareness about the impact plastic has on the environment, our health and wildlife.

Australians spend over half a billion dollars on bottled water every year. Not only is bottled water on average 2000 times the price of regular tap water,* it is also a large contributor  to environmental damage globally. By choosing tap water over bottled water, people are choosing to care for oceans and wildlife, as well as their own personal health and the right to water without paying excessive amounts for it.

From the 17th February 2014, single-use plastic bottles will not be used by any staff member in LUSH’s 26 Australian retail stores, as well as the LUSH kitchen and head office.

LUSH will also be turning its stores into official refill stations, encouraging people to refill their water bottles for free as opposed to purchasing more unnecessary plastic.

Customers will be able to purchase a limited edition campaign drink bottle (RRP $15.95) with all profits donated to TAKE 3.

Throughout the campaign, LUSH’s eight flagship store windows will display 266 plastic water bottles in fishing nets, representing the amount of bottles and cans littered or thrown into landfill each second in Australia. LUSH staff will be educating customers in-store and encouraging them to take three simple steps of action to help reduce unnecessary plastic consumption.

1.    Refill – Purchase a reusable drink bottle and refill it in any LUSH store.

2.    Take 3 – Anywhere people go, they can take 3 pieces of litter away and dispose of it thoughtfully.

3.    Sign – Sign a petition asking for a 10 cent refund on beverage containers to reduce litter and double recycling rates across Australia.

Tim Silverwood, co-founder of TAKE 3 says,

"Over 6 million tonnes of trash enters the world's oceans every year to become marine debris. Marine debris is responsible for the death of over a million innocent sea creatures every year. Estimates suggest that up to one third of total global plastic pollution comes from the beverage industry alone! We all have a part to play in reducing the amount of plastic entering our oceans and landfills. Refilling your reusable water bottle is a simple action that will help save the planet, our oceans and save you money!”

Emma Hart, Ethical Campaigns Co-ordinator says,

“At LUSH we believe in not using excess packaging. Single-use plastic makes up a huge percentage of waste that makes its way into our oceans, so we have decided to be part of the solution. While we are running this campaign with Take 3 in our shop windows for one week, we are committed to making a longer lasting difference. We have banned the use of plastic beverage containers throughout our business and have turned our stores into permanent refill stations to encourage our customers to refill their reusable drink bottles.”

About TAKE 3
‘Take 3' is a not-for-profit organisation formed in 2009 that aims to raise awareness of marine debris by encouraging each visitor to the beach, waterway or...anywhere to simply take 3 pieces of rubbish with them when they leave. We also encourage everyone to reduce their unnecessary plastic consumption - and make our lives a little less plastic.
'Take 3' aims to expand their message throughout Australia and the world and the group has already received widespread acclaim for their simple yet powerful message.  In March 2011 'Take 3' was awarded the Innaugural 'Taronga Conservation Society Green Grant' and a $50, 000 purse to help develop the organisation with the help of the team at Taronga Zoo. They aim to build on existing partnerships that will see the message target the wider community of beach users including surfers, fishermen, recreational boaters, surf life savers and everyone living on the coastal fringe.

Coles vs. Woolworths Online Shopping

Dan & I put to the test the online grocery shopping to see if this was going to be something better for our household. We had a few reasons for wanting to do online grocery shopping being:

  • We don't want to impulse buy on things we see in the shops
  • The weather may make it hard for us to get out with taking Niahbella (e.g if it rains we don't want to take Niahbella out in it - our local shops aren't undercover).
  • Our local shopping centre has become a huge complex now with the recent upgrade and revamp adding in so many more shops so the car parking is a nightmare.
  • If I was to go do the grocery shopping myself I wouldn't be able to as I have the pram with Niahbella.
  • Catering for parties or large events it' a good way to get your bulk order to you.

First off Dan & I tried Woolworths because they offered free shipping for your first 3 orders so that enticed us to use them. Dan & I however usually shop at Coles for majority of our groceries as we just find the pricing better towards our overall shop.
When paying through Woolworths you need a credit card to purchase - this was the only pay method offered by Woolworths.

When we first got our order through Woolworths the driver asked where we would like the groceries - as I'm not always with a clean house I just advised to put them near the front door as I didn't want the driver to see my messy house haha!

I was pretty sceptical about ordering fresh produce from either store online but I decided to just order a watermelon piece to see how it arrived and I wasn't too impressed it was all yucky in the white part making it look like either it was an old piece or was just smacked around a bit to much on its way here.
My birthday came up in the next few orders I made with Woolworths and then they sent me an email giving me $10 off my next shop and a code to use for a Woolworths mud cake for free.
The usual delivery fee is around $13 for the order.

Dan & I then went onto try Coles as they offer first shop delivered free as long as it is over $100 and they have now introduced free delivery on a Wednesday - which is something we will be taking into consideration and most likely taking advantage off once we get our shopping sorted because we usually have a routine shop of having it delivered or going to the shops on a weekend so we always run out on a weekend basis.

When paying through Coles you can pay via credit card or you have the option of paying via EFTPOS when they deliver your groceries. I was going to try out the EFTPOS option to be a little different from what I had always done with Woolworths but then I thought it's just easier to get the payment done so the driver can drop the shopping and leave without having me run around to organise the payment, but this is a good option for those that don't have a credit card or debit card.

Something I found is that when I had my first shop I was missing quite a few things after my delivery had arrived and I checked the receipt and found it didn't have those missing products on there - so I had a little play around online and I noticed that when you click the 'add to trolley' button it doesn't always go into your actual trolley so I warn you to double check that it goes in!
As I said above for being sceptical with ordering fresh produce, I was being the same with Coles but decided to do a bigger produce order and it wasn't so bad but I found the lettuce wasn't that great and was small.
The usual delivery fee for Coles was between $9-$13 with a minimum shop of $50.

Overall when it comes to them both you can select a time slot that best suits you for delivery and day.
Make sure you sign up to both of the offer emails as they have different specials going from time to time where you will get free delivery etc.

I wouldn't order fresh fruit & veg produce as I would rather pick myself from the stores and no that it will be a good one rather then expecting anything to turn up via delivery.

Have you used online shopping before? What was it like for you?

5 months in

Lately it has been struggle town for me here and I know that my problems are probably self caused and that I can easily fix them but lacking motivation!
I have been so concerned with my weight lately but I am just struggling to get motivated to get to the gym. I personally prefer to go to the gym in the early morning and also in the area I am in there isn't anyone to go with but luckily my sister has just moved here as of yesterday so hoping I can convince her to come with me a few times!
As I haven't been to a gym in this area I need to suss out one that I like there are quite a few actually from the top of my head I can think of 4.
Because I am self concious of my body I am thinking I need to go to a gym with a girls only part so I can hide away until I am comfortable to train with other eyes!
And also need to find one with child care so I can drop Niah in for an hour or so whilst Mumma works up a sweat.

Little Miss Niah has been a bit of a terror lately with her sleeping - from Friday to Sunday nights she wasn't going down until 11-12am at night and would just scream and cry for us. I was thinking maybe it was teething related as I definitely know that her gums are getting more harder as she gummy bites down on my hands at times and because of the look on her rusks after she has had a gnaw at it.
Last night she was better for us though went down around 10pm - she actually fell asleep at about 8:30pm on her own but she missed her feed so when we went to put her down she woke straight up and wouldn't go back down.

Niah rolled over about 2 weeks ago now for the first time - she rolls on to her right side from her back, no other way. Her crawling doesn't look like it will start for a while yet though as she can't get up on her hands and knees yet but I have a feeling she might be one of those head crawlers haha.
Niah is getting very strong with being able to sit on her own for a little bit whilst we hold her or she is sitting between our legs - she evens pulls herself up a little trying to sit up when she is laying on her back. It won't be long before she is sitting up on her own I say.

We recently brought her a jumperoo and she learnt how to start her 'jumping' the day after she first got in it. It's just adorable! Niah is very much in love with her jumperoo. It is giving her long periods of entertainment and she has lots of giggles and smiles to show us with her new toy. As well as putting her to sleep exhausted from jumping as you can see in the attached photo hehe.

Something we need to invest in is a walker encouraging her to move on her legs. We are also needing to get a new high chair as the one we have does not have an incline on the seat so we can move her back and forth and the tray doesn't have different adjusted widths so we can bring it closer to her for when she starts self feeding more which is kind of now.
It really goes to show that you don't actually know what you need until you have brought something and really experienced it.
Another purchase that needs to be made is a bath seat and bath mats - this little miss goes sliding when she's in the bath! As you may have read before Niah wasn't having a bar of the bath's before really but now she loves them!

Niahbella has been eating solids since 3 months and we've been giving her more real food now rather then just the purees so she can get a real taste of the foods.
Rockmelon has become a favourite food of hers as well as icy poles when its hot haha!
Every Mum is different but I am not too fussed and am happy giving her anything within limits that she will be able to not choke to have a try of.
We tried Niah on some formula the other day as I wanted to see if she would sleep through the night and would go down earlier but nope - not at all. She slept through for the first night but not again since.
Niah is going through these funny phases too by not wanting to have a breastfeed but then doesn't want formula either and then she had a mini phase of only wanting the bottle. I am just getting so confused and really worry about her not getting enough and thinking that maybe she is grumpy and up till late because she is hungry but I offer her everything and she won't have a bar of it.

My studying and blogging is very much effected also - I just don't find the time to get anything done. I need like a life coach or a nanny seriously to be able to give me a few hours a day break to get things done because by the time Niah is off to sleep at night time I am just pooped and cannot be bothered doing anything and am off to bed myself.
